Junior Surf (Nippers)
From the age of 6 years children can join their local Surf Life Saving Club to participate in Junior Surf. We encourage children to have fun and develop their skills, so they can enjoy the beach and one day might be able to save someone else too. It’s about developing tomorrow’s lifeguards and opening up a whole new world to children. There are over 1700 children involved in the Junior Surf programme within the Bay of Plenty region.

There are five achievement levels within the Junior Surf programme providing a managed pathway for children to gain confidence in the surf.Level one
• Confidence in the water
• Basic theory questions about keeping safe at the beach
Level two
• Technique while body surfing and wading
• Nine theory questions
Level three
• Catching waves
• Theory questions cover being a Lifeguard as well as keeping safe at the beach
Level Four
• 200m pool swim
• Correct technique for duck diving
• Rips and identifying wave types
Level five
• Increased skill development for surf swimming
• Theory questions cover setting up for patrol and parts of the inflatable Rescue Boat
At the age of 12 years, children can attain their Surf Life Saving Certificate, a precursor to the Surf Lifeguard Award they can achieve from the age of 14 years.
How do we become involved?
Each club runs its own Junior Surf Programme. For contact details of Surf Life Saving Clubs around the Bay of Plenty Region click here.
Most Clubs run their Junior Surf programme on Sunday mornings from October through to March, joining is as easy as heading down to the beach and signing up!
Competition
Surf Life Saving Bay of Plenty will be running a number Junior Surf competition events for those members who want to take part in events and have fun testing their skills against those from other Clubs. Events are outlined on our events calendar.
Coaching
Junior Surf offers the rewarding opportunity to give something back to your Club and community by becoming a Junior Surf Coach or Co-ordinator, no qualifications are needed just an understanding of Lifeguarding and the skills taught and a passion to encourage others!
En daarna gaan we surfen.
